Big Hearted

By Jeffrey M. Anderson

Master filmmaker Clint Eastwood continues in the classic Howard Hawks/John Ford tradition with unobtrustive direction, relaxed pacing, and strong characters and storytelling.

This time he plays a retired FBI agent with a recent heart transplant who finds himself back on a case when he discovers that his organ donor was murdered.

Eastwood and screenwriter Brian Helgeland can't quite keep all the plot elements on track especially a romance between Clint and the heart donor's sister (Wanda De Jesus) but when the film is this snappy, snazzy and throrougly enjoyable, a few missteps are OK.

On the plus side, the film goes out of its way to develop some interesting Latino characters. Anjelica Huston co-stars as Eastwood's concerned doctor.

DVD Details: Clint Eastwood is capable of making Great Movies, and so when this Good Movie came out, most reviewers wrote it off. But it's still a very solid thriller with Eastwood portraying a retired FBI agent recently recovering from a heart transplant operation. He begins investigating the death of the woman whose heart saved his life. The film falls apart during the climactic chase sequence, but it's full of Eastwood's careful pacing and crafty characterizations. The disc comes with a making-of doc, trailers and interviews.
